WW2 German Rkr 31 (Richtpreis 31) aiming circle optical sight

Recovered from positions on the Bocage ridge line by Monts-en-bessin Normandy. The artillery spotters here were able to bring down devastating fire on advancing Allied units during the Operation Epsom attacks in June 1944.

The sight was used to measure horizontal & vertical angles for the aiming of indirect fire weapons such as artillery pieces / mortars & could be used for direct observation or placed on a map for plotting positions and landmarks. It featured a levelling bubble on the telescope & a spherical level for precise levelling of the instrument. The angle-of-sight & traversing mechanisms were graduated for accurate measurements.
