Very rare lovely starter drive assembly from inside the Damiler-Benz DB601 engine on German Messerschmitt bf 109E-1-3874 of 6/JG3,shot down on 26th August 1940 during the Battle of Britain
This is a large internal engine part a starter drive assembly from inside Daimler-Benz DB601 engine from a Messerschmitt 109 shot down during the Battle of Britain.
This drive assembly is in excellent condition which has been very well cleaned and preserved retaining most of its original colour and has some of its original black paintwork it has only some very light damage from the crash as it is a very heavy solid part which has stood up to the crash impact.The part is 6 half inches wide and is perfect for display and makes a rare and striking addition to any collection from one of the most famous wreck recovery’s of a Battle of Britain aircraft. The part comes with 3xA5 laminated information cards with pictures including a large detail cutaway diagram showing the part in place on the engine.
The part comes from German Messerschmitt bf 109E-1 work number 3874 of 6/JG3 which was shot down by RAF Hurricane and crashed at 5.00pm on the 26th August 1940 during the Battle of Britain.
The aircraft crashed at Chislet Marshes near Saint Nicholas at Wade in Kent. The pilot was Unteroffizier Friedrich ("Fritz") Buchner (aged 24) was killed in the crash. A major recovery of the Messerschmitt 109 was done in 1984.
At approximately 12:20 PM the Messerschmitt 109 while engaging Royal Air Force (RAF) fighters over the Thames Estuary and Thanet, the aircraft was shot down by Flying Officer K.J. Marston of No. 56 Squadron, flying a Hawker Hurricane.
Excavation & Burial: The crash site was not significantly excavated until 1984, when researchers recovered the aircraft's serial plates, Buchner’s collar tabs, and an embroidered handkerchief with the initials "FB". Following the recovery, he was laid to rest at the Cannock Chase German War Cemetery in 1987
