This is a very rare broken china cup and saucer remains which are obviously not a complete cup and saucer,the cup has part of an eagle that can be seen the saucer which is maker marked BAVARIA 1940 and with its eagle perfectly clear be seen. The china sections are around 5 inches long they still have there lovely white colour and black markings they are in excellent condition solid, well-preserved, and carefully cleaned making them ideal for display or as part of a collection.The china cup and saucer were used on the German battleship Tirpitz and were recovered in 1974 from the lake bed where the battleship sunk at Kaafjord in Norway on 12th November 1944.The china cup and saucer come with 2 X A5 laminated information cards with a picture of the cup and diagram with many pictures.
These pieces of Kriegsmarine crockery, bottles and other items were recovered by Peter Cornish of the British Sub-Aqua club, who successfully masterminded the recovery of the bow section of the British midget submarine X-7 from Kaafjord in Norway. During the search for the submarine in 1974 the British Sub-Aqua club found two huge mounds of broken crockery, bottles, and other items one from either side of the Tirpitz were discovered on the bed of the lake.
The X-7 Submarine was sunk in September 1943 during an unsuccessful attack on the Tirpitz although several mines carried by the X-7 detonated the ship did not sink. The concussion from the explosions did however break most of the crockery and other items carried onboard and it was dumped overboard after the attack and some of the items ended up of the lakebed after she was sunk.
