Very rare airframe section that is blue painted unit badge remains from German Messerschmitt Bf109e 1/JG51,number 4850, shot down by Spitfire,pilot Squadron Leader J.A. Leathart on 2nd September 1940
This is a very rare airframe section that is blue painted unit badge remains the blue outer edge of the 1/JG51 badge. The part with some original colour and most of original blue paintwork and a nice size section of airframe which has been squashed flat by the crash impact .The part is in nice condition for such an unusual part it has also ripped and bent by the impact crash it is in relic but solid condition and has been nicely cleaned perfect for display or any collection and is 6 inches long by 3 half inches in size. The part comes from the unit badge on German Messerschmitt Bf109e 1/JG51, work number 4850 which was shot down by RAF Spitfire flown by Squadron Leader J.A. Leathart of 54 Squadron at 8.00am on 2nd September 1940 during the battle of Britain.
The Messerschmitt crashed at at South Poston, near Leeds Castle, Maidstone. The pilot was Leutnant H. Thorl, who bald out and was captured unhurt. This part was recovered in 1970’s by the London Aeronautical Museum.
The part comes with 2xA5 laminated information cards with picture of Spitfire pilot.
