US ARMY MESS TINS RECOVERED FROM THE WOODS AROUND THE TOWN OF St. VITH IN THE ARDENNES FOREST, FROM THE OPENING DAYS OF THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE IN THE WINTER OF 1944-45.

Not been cleaned since found - thought the original soot blackening on the base of the mess tins told a story!

The German troops needed to capture St Vith to maintain the momentum of the attack as it was a strategic rail & road junction. The tenacious defence by US troops delayed the German timetable by nearly a week, only giving up the town on the 23 December 1944.
