Unusual to find British 13 pounder shell case dated 2nd August 1916, recovered from old trench line in the area behind what was Red Chateau in Courcelette, the September 1916 battlefield on the Somme.

This is a unusual to find from the battlefield a fired British 1 pounder brass shell case which is battle damaged squashed and bent on the top neck down with crack but a complete case it is in nice condition it still retains a lot of its brass colour but has discolored and dirty with some damage from being buried as well. The case still has all of its original markings on the bottom very clear to see including dated August 1916 complete with its primer.The case is still very solid and is not braking up or falling apart it has been very well cleaned and perfect for display or any collection. The case was recovered from old trench line in the area behind what was Red Chateau in Courcelette, the September 1916 battlefield on the Somme. .The case comes with 2x A5 laminated information cards with map.

The village of Courcelette were the scene of very heavy fighting in September 1916. On the 15th, the village was included in the extreme left of the Allied attack and was taken by the 2nd Canadian Division supported by tanks, with the 4th and 6th Brigades storming the outer trenches and the sugar factory, and the 5th Brigade seizing the village. The chateau was destroyed by German artillery after its capture and remained very close to the front line until the German retreat in the following spring of 1917.
