German Junkers Ju 88 Engine Cowling – Rare Battlefield Souvenir

A fantastic and extremely rare complete engine cowling taken as a wartime souvenir from a German Junkers Ju 88 bomber. This is a substantial and highly displayable piece, retaining excellent original colour throughout, including visible black paintwork on the inner surface.

The cowling remains complete and structurally solid, showing only light impact damage consistent with crash recovery. It retains its inspection panels, one of which is clearly maker marked, while the other still opens and closes. A complete maker’s label and associated markings are also present.

The piece has been carefully cleaned and remains strong and stable, making it ideal for display or any serious collection. Measuring approximately 52 inches long by 30 inches wide, it is an impressive large-scale Luftwaffe relic.

Provenance

This cowling originates from Junkers Ju 88 bomber Werknummer 0882278, coded 4D+IP, of 6./KG 30. The aircraft crashed on 8 August 1941 after making a forced landing at Lentokonejanka near Rovaniemi in central Finland.

The aircraft came down in boggy terrain following engine failure. The crew were able to walk away unharmed and were later recovered by a Fieseler Storch.

Crew details:

  • Unteroffizier Heigl

  • Unteroffizier Gerhard Jabs

  • Unteroffizier Häring

  • Gefreiter Becker

At the time, Kampfgeschwader 30 was based in Norway and was engaged in operations against Allied Arctic convoys.

Additional Information

Supplied with 3 x A5 laminated information cards, including photographs of the aircraft, crash site (1941), and pilot details.
