Russian screw plug base in 76.2mm hollow charge projectile fired by T34/76 tank recovered on Seelow Heights April 1945
This is a Russian screw plug base from a 76.2mm hollow charge projectile fired by a T-34/76 tank. It is a complete plug that could be screwed back into the shell if required. The piece retains much of its original paint, is completely empty and inert, and is in excellent condition for a battlefield-recovered item. There is some light wear from burial, but it has been thoroughly cleaned and is now ideal for display or addition to any collection.
The plug was recovered from the battlefield at the Seelow Heights in 1945, the opening battle for Berlin. A fine relic from the iconic Russian tank gun projectile.
The Battle of the Seelow Heights formed part of the Seelow Berlin Offensive Operation (16 April-2 May 1945). This was one of the last major assaults on entrenched German defensive positions in the Second World War, fought over three days (16-19 April 1945). Nearly one million Soviet troops of the 1st Belorussian Front, including 78,556 soldiers of the Polish 1st Army under Marshal Georgi Zhukov, attacked the strategic position known as the "Gates of Berlin." They faced around 110,000 troops of the German 9th Army commanded by General Theodor Busse, as part of Army Group Vistula.
Although the Seelow Heights saw some of the fiercest fighting, it was only one of several crossing points along the Oder and Neisse rivers during the Soviet advance. This battle was the opening stage of the wider Battle of Berlin, which ultimately resulted in the encirclement of the German 9th Army and the subsequent Battle of Halbe.
