This is a rare-to-find Russian M1891 Mosin-Nagant rifle bayonet, retaining a considerable amount of its original colour. It has only very light surface rust, remains solid and has been very well cleaned, making it an excellent piece for display or any collection.

The bayonet was recovered from Sukhaya Mechetka Ravine in Stalingrad, an area that saw heavy fighting during the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942–1943.

The Battle of Sukhaya Mechetka Ravine, 23–24 August 1942

The clash at Sukhaya Mechetka Ravine was a desperate Soviet delaying action that successfully blocked the German 16th Panzer Division from capturing the vital Stalingrad Tractor Factory and reaching the banks of the Volga River.

Having rapidly advanced across the open steppe and outpaced their infantry support, General Hans-Valentin Hube's tanks reached the northern rim of the steep natural ravine, where they encountered an improvised Soviet defensive line. This included the 1077th Anti-Aircraft Regiment, uniquely manned by young female volunteers, elements of the 10th NKVD Rifle Division and civilian factory worker militias.

Without proper infantry protection or standard armour-piercing ammunition, the women lowered their high-velocity anti-aircraft guns to fire directly at the advancing German tanks. Meanwhile, factory workers sent newly assembled, unpainted T-34 tanks straight from the production lines into battle.

The fierce and unexpected Soviet resistance inflicted heavy losses on German transport vehicles, forced the advancing tanks to seek cover within the ravine and successfully blunted the German advance. Although many Soviet gun positions were eventually overrun and destroyed, their stand bought the Soviet High Command valuable time to ferry regular reinforcements across the river and secure the northern sector of the city.

It comes complete with two A5 laminated information cards, featuring a map and numerous pictures relating to the history of the battle and its location.
