This is a Russian 120mm mortar bomb tail section, a fired battlefield relic. It is complete with all fins, though a few are bent or ripped from impact. This back section of a standard 120mm mortar retains its primer, which shows some maker markings and is dated 1944. The tail was blown off in the explosion after firing. It is empty and inert, deactivated by condition.
The mortar tail section is solid and in relic condition, retaining some of its original paint. The metal is pitted and rusty, but overall it remains in very good condition for display or inclusion in any collection. The piece has been carefully cleaned.
The mortar was fired by the Russian 1st Guards Tank Army and recovered near the village of Sachsendorf on the Seelow Heights, 16-17 April 1945, during the final defence of Berlin against the Red Army on the Eastern Front. The item comes with an A5 laminated information card with photographs.
