This is a Romanian soldiers shovel head, used by a member of the Romanian 4th Army. It is rare to find examples like this, as they were far less common than German counterparts. The shovel head is missing its wooden handle but remains in very solid condition. It has been cleaned, though shows some pitting and surface rust from being buried, making it a fine battlefield relic perfect for display or a collection.

The shovel head was recovered south of Stalingrad and would have been used by a soldier of the Romanian 4th Army during the battles in 1942-1943.

During the Battle of Stalingrad, the Romanian 3rd and 4th Armies were tasked with protecting the northern and southern flanks, respectively, of the German 6th Army as it sought to capture the city defended by the Soviet Red Army. Underequipped and underpowered, these forces were unable to stop the Soviet Operation Uranus in November 1942, which broke through both flanks and left the 6th Army encircled in Stalingrad. The Romanian armies suffered enormous losses, effectively ending their offensive capability on the Eastern Front for the remainder of the war.
