Rare WW1 Italian ice goggles from mountain positions on the Isonzo / Soca front, Italy - Austro-Hungarian border.
They have been cleaned and coated in either a lacquer or black paint to preserve them (not by me!)
Acquired from a local collector at a militaria fair in Sempeter, Slovenia - photo of fair shown in pictures.
The front stretched 90–93km along the Soča River (Isonzo in Italian), characterized by steep mountains and karst plateaus that made offensive operations extremely difficult. It was the scene of 12 major battles although combat was continuous in the area. Casualties were horrendous, half of the entire Italian war death total - some 300,000 of 600,000 were suffered along the Soca River.
