This is a very rare part to get a Sperry Gyroscope co. Turret drive gearbox/drive shaft assembly from the bottom of the sperry ball gun turret on the underbelly of the American heavy bomber.
This is a steel made part which is in fantastic condition with all of its nice original colours and black paintwork.The part has been nicely cleaned it has been damaged ripped and smashed off by the impact of the crash but is still very rare to get such recognizable part from the ball turret machine guns on a crashed B17 bomber.The part is perfect for display or any collection and real one off never had parts from ball turret for sale. The part is 5 inches long by 5 inches wide in size with very little discolor from being buried. This lovely part is from .American B-17 Flying Fortress, serial number 43-38898, which was known as "Hitler's Hoe Doe" also referred to as "Blind Date. The bomber was hit by anti-aircraft fire (flak) and crashed near Tutow while on a raid over Berlin on 3 February 1945. The part comes with 3xA5 laminated information cards with pictures and a diagram of the ball turret with area the part is from marked off in red boxes.
The B17 bomber was part of the 381st Bomb Group, 534th Bomb Squadron (Station 167 at Ridgewell, Essex, England).The raids in February and March 1945, aimed at the Friedrichstrasse Railway Station, Tempelhof marshalling yards, and various industrial sites, command-and-control, and government centres to destroy the city's infrastructure and support the Soviet advance. The raid on the 3rd of February was on Tempelhof marshalling yards.
The bomber crashed in flames and exploded near the village of Tutow near Berlin.
