Rare to find British 15 pounder shell projectile, fired by one of the Territorial Force artillery brigades in 51st (Highland) Division, recovered from battlefield at Neuve Chapelle of May 1915

This is a rare to find British 15 pounder shell projectile which were only used in small numbers at the very early stages of the war and by Territorial units.The shell projectile which is in nice solid condition with no fuse.The steel case is rusty but solid with some damage to neck and top part of the case from rust damage it has been fired and has its nice complete brass driving band which is its lovely shiny colour. The projectile is completely empty and inert it has been well cleaned and overall nice condition for display and for any collection and being 15 pounder much rarer to find then the standard 18 , this projectile is 7 inches long. The projectile would have been fired by one of the Territorial Force artillery brigades within the 51st (Highland) Division. The only unit with 15 pounder guns on this battlefield. The projectile was recovered from the battlefield at Festubert near Neuve Chapelle of May 1915.The projectile comes with 2xA5 laminated information cards with map and pictures

.The Battle of Festubert (May 15–25, 1915) was a costly British offensive on the Western Front during World War I, part of the larger Second Battle of Artois, where British and Canadian forces attempted to break through German lines south of Neuve Chapelle, resulting in heavy casualties (over 16,000 for the British) but only minor territorial gains as they adjusted to attrition warfare after a failed attack at Aubers Ridge and trench warfare would now become the way of life.

Deploying to France in May 1915 and rushed on to frontline action as part of the British offensive they were Initially equipped with 15-pounder guns only territorial units used these guns until they were re-equipped with 18-pounder guns in late 1915.
