Rare Pre-WWI German 10.5cm Naval Brass Shell Case – Dated 1911 (Wilhelmshaven)
A very rare and desirable pre-First World War German 10.5cm brass shell case, dated 1911, originally fired by a 10.5cm naval gun (SK L/35 or SK L/40).
Condition
This large-calibre case retains a good portion of its original brass finish, remaining clean and visually appealing, with some light discolouration in places consistent with age. It is complete but missing its primer. The base retains clear original markings, including the 1911 date.
The case has been carefully cleaned and remains a strong, solid display piece in very good condition for its age.
Provenance
Recovered from Wilhelmshaven, the principal German Imperial Navy base during the First World War period (1914–1918). Wilhelmshaven was the largest German naval installation and the main operating base for the High Seas Fleet in the North Sea.
Historical Context
German 10.5cm naval guns (SK L/35 and SK L/40) were fast-firing medium-calibre weapons used widely across Imperial German naval vessels. They served as secondary armament on cruisers, gunboats, and converted merchant raiders. The L/40 variant was notably fitted to ships such as the Bremen-class cruisers.
Additional Information
Supplied with 1 x A5 laminated information card with photographs.
