Rare complete reel of German barbed wire recovered from Bernafay wood in 2014.This was a battle in the opening days of the July 1916 Somme attack.

This is a rare find from the battlefield being complete which is a reel of German thick heavy barbed wire which has never been used it is in its original reel how it was brought to the frontline 100 years ago.The wire is in nice condition for a relic rusty but solid and not braking up or falling apart it has been very nicely cleaned but still with some Somme mud attached.The reel is 9 inches tall and is a nice one and unusual one for the collection perfect for display. The reel was recovered from Bernafay wood in 2014.This was a battle in the opening days of the July 1916 Somme attack.recovered . The reel comes with 2 X A5 laminated information cards with pictures and map.

Bernafay Wood, located near Montauban village which was captured by the 9th Scottish Division on 3-4 July 1916 during the opening days of the Somme offensive. A dressing station was established there soon after its capture in early July and was in operation until October. The wood was lost by the British in the German spring offensive of 1918, with the wood captured by the Germans in March–April 1918. However, it was retaken on the 27 August 1918 again by the same soldiers of the 9th Scottish Division who captured it 2 years earlier.
