The Battle of Monte Cassino, a series of four intense offensives during World War II, took place in Italy from January to May 1944. The goal was to break through the Gustav Line and capture Rome. The Allies, including troops from America, Britain, Canada, France, India, New Zealand, and Poland, faced fierce German resistance in difficult terrain, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. The battles were particularly brutal, with some comparing the intensity to World War I Western Front battles.
