Lovely marked coolant system Y-manifold,located between the Merlin engine- header tank, from RAF Spitfire number P9458, shot down by German Messerschmitt 109, on 1st September 1940,battle of Britain
This is a rare part from the battle of Britain and its most famous fighter plane.This is a Coolant system Y-manifold which was located between the Merlin engine and the header tank and radiator plumbing.
This part which is mag allow made and has a clear to see part number,maker mark on the side and on the brass fittings on either side it is marked it has some damage from the crash it is a bit pitted and cracked but nothing to bad it still has all of its steel and brass original colours it has not discoloured very much it has been very well cleaned and is perfect for display or any collection the size of the part is 11 inches long and 3 inches wide.The part is from RAF Spitfire number P9458 shot down by German Messerschmitt 109 at 11.15am on 1st September 1940, the pilot Flight Officer Oswald Saint John Pigg during the battle of Britain.
The part comes with 2 x A5 laminated information card with picture of the pilot also with diagram picture showing the part and where abouts on the aircraft it is from in clear pictures..
Oswald St John Pigg served in the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain. He joined the RAF in March 1937 on a Short Service Commission and was posted to 72 Squadron at Church Fenton on 27 November 1937. On June 2, 1940, he shot down a Ju87 stuka over Dunkirk, then crash-landed, slightly wounding himself, at Gravesend. On 15 August 1940 Oswald shot down a Messerschmitt Bf109. The 22-year-old had been involved in an aerial fight, and he died when his Spitfire, P9458, was shot down by a Messerschmitt 109 over Kent. His Spitfire crashed and burned out at Elvey Farm, Pluckley.
