Lovely French model 1866 French Chassepot Bayonet,battle damaged and 1917 dated inspection stamp,serial number 16317 recovered from old French dug out at Maricourt on the July 1916 Somme battlefield

This is a lovely condition French M1886 chassepot bayonet which is battle damaged with its blade ripped off but it still has its nice shiny brass handle. The bayonet has fair clear to see 1917 dated inspection stamp and the serial number 16317.It has its lovely original colours and is in very nice semi- relic solid condition, which has been nicely cleaned and is perfect for display or any collection. The bayonet was recovered in 2010 from an old French dugout in woodland on which the French and British front lines met at close range to the German trenches at Maricourt on the July 1916 Somme battlefield. Also used in the later 1918 battles during the German spring offensive.The bayonet comes with 2 x A5 laminated information cards with map.

Maricourt village was held by the Allies an attack was launched from this area on the 1st July 1916 at the beginning of the Battles of the Somme offensive, but no major gains were made until a week or so later. Maricourt was the point of junction where the British and French trench lines connected and was a very short distance between the Allied and German front lines. The Village was lost in the German advance of March 1918 and recaptured at the end of the following August by British and French troops in 1918.
