This is a French 37mm shell fired from a Hotchkiss cannon. The projectile retains its twin brass driving bands, which still show a pleasing brass finish. The outer casing has only light pitting and some discolouration, but much of its original colour remains, with no holes or structural damage. The projectile fits smoothly into the casing and can be removed just as easily.
The brass shell case itself has a bright finish, with some discolouration around the base, and all original markings are present, including a date of January 1917. Both the projectile and casing are completely empty and inert. The piece has been carefully cleaned and is in overall excellent condition, making it a rare and attractive display item for any collection.
This shell was recovered from the Somme battlefield (1916–1918) and comes with an A5 laminated information card.
