This is a fragment of exploded case from one of the aerial bombs carried onboard the bomber when it was shot down and crashed the bombs blew up.
This is a case fragment which is in lovely condition still very well preserved with original black paintwork remains it is rusty but nice condition and is in relic but solid condition and a thick case section it has been very well cleaned up with sharp jagged edges it is 3 half inches long by 3 inches wide and is perfect for display or any collection.
The part is from one of the aerial bombs carried on RAF Halifax bomber mark 2 number HR752 of 158 squadron which was on a night raid over Eastern France when it was Shot down by a German night-fighter and crashed near Sacquenay Northeast of Dijon in France on the night of 15-16 July 1943.There are not many parts around from this aircraft at all as only small fragments were ever found.
The part comes with 3x A5 laminated information cards with pictures and were recovered in August 1996 by the aircraft recovery digger the late Mr Alan Brown who visited many crash sites all over Europe for many years and had them mounted on one of his famous wooden boards.
The Halifax was on a raid to attack the Peugeot factory near the Swiss border. A total of 165 Halifax bombers were on the raid and 5 of which were Lost (3.0%). Clear weather conditions and the target was only lightly defended but PFF marked 700 yards beyond the factory and as a result 80% of the bombs fell on the town and only 20% on the target. The raid had no impact on production at the factory.
The Halifax bomber was shot down by Messerschmitt 110-night fighter flown by ace Hauptman Paul-Hubert Rauh it was his 7th Kill.
