RAF Hurricane Aluminium Panel – Battle of Britain Relic (N2617)
A large aluminium aircraft panel from an RAF Hurricane, retaining its original finish and distinctive rivet structure unique to Hurricane construction.
The panel shows clear evidence of crash impact, having been bent and torn on contact, yet it remains solid and well preserved. It retains much of its original surface colour, along with traces of original black paintwork. The piece has been carefully cleaned while preserving its authentic character. Measuring approximately 6 inches by 6.5 inches, it is an excellent and highly displayable relic for any serious collection.
Provenance
This panel originates from RAF Hurricane N2617, piloted by Sergeant D.A.S. McKay. The aircraft was shot down at approximately 13:32 on 18 August 1940 during the Battle of Britain by German ace Oberleutnant Gerhard Schöpfel.
Hurricane N2617 was serving with No. 501 Squadron when it engaged Messerschmitt Bf 109s over Canterbury. During this combat, Schöpfel—of JG 26—claimed the aircraft as his 10th victory, shooting down a total of four Hurricanes in the same engagement.
Combat Report Extract – Gerhard Schöpfel
“I was leading the unit due to the temporary absence of its commander, Adolf Galland. We were flying ahead of the bombers tasked with attacking RAF Fighter Command airfields. Our first contact with British fighters occurred near Canterbury. I observed a formation of Hurricanes below, flying in close groups of three, climbing in a wide spiral—an easy target. I dived to attack and shot down four of them within a few minutes.”
Additional Information
Supplied with 2 x A5 laminated information cards, including images of the pilots involved and detailed information on the aircraft and its service history.
