This is a glass-framed aluminium maker label that still retains much of its original paintwork, with markings that remain clear and legible. It is presented in a glass-fronted box frame, complete with background information and numerous photographs, making it perfect for display. The frame measures 9 inches by 9 inches in size.
The label was recovered from a Russian Il-2 Sturmovik ground-attack aircraft of the 5th Guards Army, which was shot down and crashed near the Psel River, south of Kursk, on the Voronezh Front. This area was defended against the German 2nd SS Panzer Corps during the Battle of Kurskpart of Operation Citadel, the German offensive of July, August 1943 in Russia.
The Voronezh Front was a Soviet military formation equivalent to an Army Group, named after the town of Voronezh on the Don River, where it was first engaged. Established in June 1942 when the German 6th Army reached Voronezh during Operation Blau, the Voronezh Front went on to fight in the Battle of Voronezh, took part in defensive operations leading to Stalingrad, and subsequently contributed to the encirclement of the German 6th Army in December 1942. During the Battle of Kursk in July, August 1943, the Front operated on the southern sector, where it commanded Soviet forces in the famous Battle of Prokhorovka.
