This is an authentic, glass-framed aluminium airframe section recovered from a German Messerschmitt 262 jet . The relic which is large size it still retains most of its original wartime finish black paintwork, making it an attractive and increasingly scarce piece from one of the Luftwaffe's most recognisable aircraft.
The aluminium section was torn, bent and distorted by the impact of the crash but remains in good, solid condition. It has been carefully cleaned while preserving its original character and wartime patina.
The relic is presented in a glass-fronted box frame, complete with aircraft information, making it an excellent display piece for any aviation or Second World War collection. The frame measures approximately 10 half inches by 10 half inches.
The part comes from German Messerschmitt me 262 jet plane work number 37064 flown by Ace Helmut Lennartz. The jet which crashed in Bremen after being chased and attacked by American P-51 Mustangs on the 19th March 1945.
Helmut Lennartz was the pilot of ME262 number 37064 when he encountered US fighter ace Major R. Foy in his P-51 mustang. The jet was flying with another ME262 the two had been aloft long enough to be extremely low on fuel and had hoped to land at Achmer or Hesepe. However, a swarm of U.S. fighters in these areas precluded them and the two made for Bremen, using only enough power to keep ahead of Foy. As Lennartz was on final to Bremen, both engines quit due to fuel starvation, and he made a rough landing, damaging the landing gear and crashing of the side of the runway wrecked and completely un air worthy.
