This is an authentic, glass-framed aluminium airframe structure section which still has most of its black camouflage paintwork remains very clear to see.
The aluminium section was torn, bent and distorted by the impact of the crash but remains in good, solid condition. It has been carefully cleaned while preserving its original character and wartime patina.
The relic is presented in a glass-fronted box frame, complete with aircraft information, making it an excellent display piece for any aviation or Second World War collection. The frame measures approximately 9 inches by 9 inches.
The part comes from American B17G Flying Fortress 43-37516 'Tondalayo' was an overall matt black finished special operations aircraft attached to the 406th Night Leaflet Squadron based at Cheddington. This B17 bomber was the personal aircraft of the unit's commander, Lieutenant Colonel Aber and being retained by him when the squadron converted to B-24 Liberators.Lieutenant Colonel Aber was on his 51st mission when he was shot down on the 4th March 1945 by friendly fire.
