This is an authentic, glass-framed aluminium airframe section recovered from a RAF Hurricane. The relic still retains traces of its original wartime finish and black paintwork, making it an attractive and increasingly scarce piece from a Battle of Britain aircraft flown by Polish pilot.
The aluminium section was torn, bent and distorted by the impact of the crash but remains in good, solid condition. It has been carefully cleaned while preserving its original character and wartime patina.
The relic is presented in a glass-fronted box frame, complete with aircraft information, making it an excellent display piece for any aviation or Second World War collection. The frame measures approximately 10 half inches by 10 half inches.
The part is from RAF Hurricane number P3700 was shot down on 9th September 1940 the pilot Polish Flight Sargent Wunsche. The plane crashed near Saddlescombe Farm, Poynings, Newtimber, Sussex. Polish Fl/Sgt Wunsche baled out, and was lightly wounded in the leg. Wunsche also suffered some burns to his face. Wünsche was then admitted to Hove hospital, it would be June 1941 before he could return to combat. A major recovery has been undertaken by the Wealdon Aviation Archaeology Group in September 1979. The remains of a shattered Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, propeller hub, head armour and cockpit components including the gun sight were all unearthed.
Kazimierz Wünsche died on 10 July 1980 in Warsaw at the age of 61 years. He was buried at the cemetery Powązkowskim
