Rare German MG151 aircraft cannon wooden crate for 1000 rounds of 20mm high explosive ground attack ammunition which has last packed date of 7 January 1944, found in Dieppe originally used in Normandy
This is a very rare to find German Luftwaffe MG151 aircraft cannon wooden crate for carrying 1000 rounds of 20mm high explosive ground attack ammunition. The box has a last packed date of 7th January 1944 and on the outside it has 3 paper labels as well including a diamond label with eagle on which i have never seen before on a German wooden crate. The crate is in very nice condition, with the wood still retaining most of its original light brown stain, though it shows some dirt, discoloration, and minor damage. The crate remains solid, not breaking up or falling apart. It has experienced some very light woodworm, but this has been treated, and the box is well preserved. A small maker mark is present on the side which is made date of 1942 and is 19 inches long by 13 inches wide. Both leather hinges are intact and in good condition, the leather strap lock is complete and still works fine and the lid opens and closes without issue. One of the cloth carry handles is also present but missing the other one. Inside, there are some knocks and marks from use, but nothing significant. This is a fine example of this unusual ammunition crate which is perfect for display or any collection. The crate comes with 2 x A5 laminated information cards. The crate was found in Dieppe originally used in the Normandy campaign in summer of 1944.
The crate held 20mm MG151 rounds with thinner walls to hold more explosive in brass cases with yellow tracers with ZZ 1506 fuses. This fuse had a time delay of approximately 8 seconds causing the shell to self-destruct after time. The fuse was used in ground combat role and was not massed produced unlike other German cannon rounds.
