Russian 122mm coiled steel shell case fired by 122mm M1938 12mm heavy Howitzer that was recovered from the Dom River area outside Stalingrad 1942-43
This is a Russian 122mm coiled steel shell case fired by 122mm M1938 12mm heavy Howitzer. The case has no original markings on the base that can be seen it is complete with its primer it is in nice solid condition for a steel case battlefield recovered with some small rust holes and some damage but nothing to bad it has been very nicely cleaned perfect to display or any collection. The shell case was recovered from the Dom River area from the battles against the German 4th Panzer Army in November-December 1942-1943 outside Stalingrad and comes with A5 laminated information card.
The 4th Panzer Army which had in it units which included the 14th and 24th Panzer Divisions and 92nd Infantry Division was under the command of General Hermann Hoth it guarded the outside perimeter of Stalingrad while the 6th Army was engaged in the battle to capture the city, For over two months, he 6th Army was embroiled in vicious fighting in the city; though it was able to take over 90% of the city, it was unable to destroy the last pockets of resistance. On 19 November 1942, The Red Army launched Operation Uranus, a counter-offensive which encircled of the entire 6th Army with the 4th Panzer were fighting Russian forces outside the city during the whole of November and December and tried and failed to break the encirclement of Stalingrad in Operation Winter Storm in December 1942.
