German soldiers Gewehr 98 rifle lovely relic with straight bolt recovered from old trench line in the area behind what was Red Chateau in Courcelette, the September 1916 battlefield on the Somme.
This is a German G98 rifle which is not totally complete but it is missing only missing its magazine everything else is there metal work wise including a complete straight barrel and straight bolt but is missing all its wood. The breach is empty of all ammunition and inert. The rifle part is deactivated by condition obviously plain to see also the barrel is blocked in side and has no moving parts all rusted solid. The rifle part is in nice condition for a relic rusty it has been very nicely cleaned and is in very solid condition and a nice one for the collection perfect for display. The rifle was recovered from old trench line in the area behind what was Red Chateau in Courcelette, the September 1916 battlefield on the Somme.The rifle comes with 3 X A5 laminated information cards with pictures and map.
The village of Courcelette were the scene of very heavy fighting in September 1916. On the 15th, the village was included in the extreme left of the Allied attack and was taken by the 2nd Canadian Division supported by tanks, with the 4th and 6th Brigades storming the outer trenches and the sugar factory, and the 5th Brigade seizing the village. The chateau was destroyed by German artillery after its capture and remained very close to the front line until the German retreat in the following spring of 1917.
