This is a German soldiers gas mask tin, partly crushed flat likely by a tank, vehicle, or battle impact. The tin still has its lid attached, which is rusty with some minor rust damage and a few small holes. It appears to have been exposed to fire, with only traces of the original green paint remaining. Despite this, the tin remains solid, has been carefully cleaned, and is perfect for display or any collection.

The gas mask tin was recovered from the Orel Salient, a heavily contested area during the opening battles of Operation Citadel in the German Kursk offensive and subsequent Russian counterattacks in July-August 1943. It comes with an A5 laminated information card.

On 12 July, the Soviets launched Operation Kutuzov, their counter-offensive on the Orel Salient, threatening the flank and rear of Models 9th Army. The 12th Panzer Division, previously held in reserve for the northern side of the Kursk salient, along with the 36th Motorized Infantry, 18th Panzer, and 20th Panzer Divisions, were redeployed to meet the Soviet spearheads.
