This is a German powder charge bag with fantastic markings including last pack date of September 1944 which is near complete and it was found inside a shell fired by 7.62cm pak [36]r anti-tank gun.This gun was the captured Russian 76.2 mm zis 3 anti-tank gun. Which the Germans rebored the barrel to a larger size to use a pak 40 shell case along with the German made [36]r projectile to give the gun more penetrating power against tanks.
The silk bag section has some rust on it from the shell case it is in nice condition for relic the silk is solid not braking up or falling apart it still retains little of its original colour as it is very dirty and stained from being buried inside the case it is 18 inches long and 2 half inches wide. It has been very nicely cleaned and in nice solid condition perfect for a collection or any display.The bag comes with 2xA5 laminated information cards with map.
The bag was inside a shell that was recovered from a lake which was used as a dump site for battlefield clearance the area where the lake is East of Bastogne in the Ardennes Forest 1944-1945 battle.This area was attacked by the German 26th Volksgrenadier Division and elements of the Panzer Lehr Division who had the panzer 4 tanks in the area.
During the run up to the Ardennes offensive, Panzer Lehr was kept in reserve on 15 December, the day before the offensive began, Panzer Lehr was still severely understrength, with only one of its two tank battalions ready for action, the other restored to its parent unit, the 3rd panzer division. Both of its panzergrenadier regiments were at 80 percent of its authorized strength. It had only 57 tanks (30 Panthers and 27 Panzer IV) and 20 Jagdpanzer IV/70's by the time the attack started.
