German nice condition bakerite transit plug with maker markings for 15cm Nebelwerfer 41 rocket recovered on the battlefield of Seelow Heights in 1945
This is a German bakelite transit plug in nice condition, with maker markings for the 15cm Nebelwerfer 41 rocket. This plug was used for transporting the rocket from the factory to the front line. The piece appears complete and undamaged, retaining all of its original colour and clearly visible maker markings. It has been carefully cleaned and is perfect for display or any collection. This plug is the transit plug, marked with the letter N, rather than the operational firing part.
The plug was recovered from a German defensive position on the battlefield of the Seelow Heights in 1945, during the opening battle for Berlin. The Battle of the Seelow Heights was part of the Seelow Berlin Offensive Operation (16 April-2 May 1945), one of the last major assaults on entrenched positions of the Second World War. Fought over three days (16-19 April 1945), nearly one million Soviet soldiers of the 1st Belorussian Front including 78,556 troops of the Polish 1st Army under Marshal Georgi Zhukov attacked the position known as the Gates of Berlin. They were opposed by about 110,000 German soldiers of the 9th Army, commanded by General Theodor Busse, as part of Army Group Vistula.
This engagement is often incorporated into the broader Battle of the Oder Neisse. The Seelow Heights saw some of the fiercest fighting of the campaign and was one of several key crossing points along the Oder and Neisse rivers. The Battle of the Oder Neisse was the opening phase of the Battle of Berlin, ultimately resulting in the encirclement of the German 9th Army and leading to the Battle of Halbe.
