This is a German lorry wheel hub with maker markings BP-HWH, partly visible. The hub features a 3-inch wide screw thread and is in relic but solid condition. It is rusty but has no holes or significant damage and has been carefully cleaned, making it ideal for display or any military collection.
The hub was used on a lorry of the 14th Panzer Division and was recovered from the battlefield near the town of Kalach, in territory captured by them during the Battle of Kalach, July August 1942, on the Stalingrad front in Russia. It comes with an A5 laminated information card.
The Battle of Kalach took place between the German Sixth Army and elements of the Soviet Stalingrad Front from 25 July to 11 August 1942. The Soviets deployed the 62nd and 64th Armies in a Don River bridgehead west of Kalach to slow the German advance on Stalingrad. They delayed the Germans for a few weeks before being destroyed or captured by the German Sixth Army, which then advanced toward Stalingrad.
The 14th Panzer Division struck the Kalach bridgehead, with spearheads making contact southwest of Kalach by late afternoon, trapping the main body of the Soviet 62nd Army (eight rifle divisions) in an encirclement. Joined by the L1 Army Corps, the Germans systematically destroyed the surrounded Soviet forces. The pocket was eliminated in four days, by 11 August, with nearly 50,000 prisoners taken. The Germans claimed the destruction of roughly 1,000 Soviet tanks and 750 guns, though tank losses are considered somewhat exaggerated. These losses alarmed Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and prompted him to commit additional reserves to the fight at Stalingrad.
