This is a German 4 round carry case lid for 4 rounds of 5cm armour piercing shells fired by 5cm pak 38 anti-tank gun with white painted stripe for armour piercing and is maker marked with waffen stamp fairly clear to see.
The container lid shows some rust damage and a few holes, complete with its carry handle that still moves. Inside it still has some of the wooden racking survives. Despite rust and dirt, the box still has lots of original paintwork remains and has been very well cleaned and remains solid, making it ideal for display or a collection.The lid was recovered from a lake East of Bastogne in the Ardennes Forest from the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944-45. The lid comes with 2xA5 laminated information cards.
The lid was recovered from a lake which was used as a dump site for battlefield clearance the area where the lake is, was attacked by the German 26th Volksgrenadier Division and elements of the Panzer Lehr Division they had the only Panzer 4 tanks in the area.
