Very rare lovely condition fuel tank filler cap from American B17 flying fortress, 42-24584 named Susfu shot down 23rd January 1943 while attacking German U-boat pens in Lorient

This is a very rare lovely condition fuel tank filler cap part which still has the cover attached by the chain and is a large aluminium airframe structure part.The part which is in very nice condition and still retains all of its original colour and most of its original green paintwork remains and some yellow undercoat primer it has ripped and bent off by the impact of a crash the part has been very nicely cleaned and is perfect for display or any collection the part is 6 inches wide and is a very rare one for display or any collection. This is the first time ever I have had a part from one of these famous American bombers The part is from American B17 flying fortress number 42-24584 named Susfu. The B17 was shot down on the 23rd of January 1943, while on bombing a mission to the German U-boat pens in Lorient, France. The bomber was attacked by Focke Wulf 190’s and crashed at Abbey Pleyben near Edern, Brest.The part comes with 2 x A5 laminated information sheets with pictures.

As the B17 bomber was crashing to ground Lieutenant Robey bailed out, but was machine gunned by the German fighters, while floating to the ground in his parachute. Lieutenant Moser was killed within the first instant of the attack on the B-17 bomber by the German fighters.
