French Lebel model 1886 rifle (Fusil Modèle 1886) lovely relic recovered in 2016 from an old German trench which meet the French and British front lines at Maricourt,1st July 1916 Somme battlefield
This is a French Lebel model 1886 rifle (Fusil Modèle 1886) which is near totally complete one with its metal work but is missing all its wood. The breach is empty of all ammunition and inert. The rifle is deactivated by condition obviously plain to see also the barrel is blocked in side and bent and has no moving parts all rusted solid. The rifle part is in nice condition for a relic rusty it has been very nicely cleaned and is in very solid condition and a nice one for the collection perfect for display. The rifle was recovered in 2016 from an old German trench which was defended by the 6th Bavarian Regiment which is where the German trenches meet the French and British front lines at very close range at Maricourt on the 1st July 1916 Somme battlefield. .The rifle comes with 3 X A5 laminated information cards with pictures and map.
Maricourt village was held by the Allies an attack was launched from this area on the 1st July 1916 at the beginning of the Battles of the Somme offensive, but no major gains were made until a week or so later. Maricourt was the point of junction where the British and French trench lines connected and was a very short distance between the Allied and German front lines. The Village was lost in the German advance of March 1918 and recaptured at the end of the following August by British and French troops in 1918.
