This is a fantastic condition French 37mm shell fired from a Hotchkiss cannon. The projectile retains its twin brass driving bands, which still show a pleasing brass finish and with all maker markings and its brass tip. The outer casing has no pitting or discolouration and is perfect even dated 1917 on the bottom. The brass case has all of its original colour with no holes or structural damage and has all its maker markings on the bottom inclding dated 1906. The projectile fits smoothly into the casing and can be removed just as easily.
Both the projectile and casing are completely empty and inert. The piece has been carefully cleaned and is in overall excellent condition, making it a rare and attractive display item for any collection.
This shell was recovered from the Somme battlefield (1916–1918) and comes with an A5 laminated information card.
