This is a very rare recognisable part of B17 bomber which is a equilibrator component from 50 Calibre waist machine gun this is part of the mount itself of one of waist gunners 50 calibre guns.
The part which is steel made and has no real paintwork remains looks like it has been burnt off possibly in the fire when the aircraft crashed but it has been well cleaned it is 9 inches long by 2 inches wide. The part still retains some of its original colour the part has some damage from the impact of the crash but is not to badly rusted at all and with only some light pitting it is still very solid not braking up at all and has been very nicely cleaned and is a rare one for perfect for display or any collection. The part was recovered from inside of American B17G Flying Fortress 43-37516 'Tondalayo', matt black finished special operations aircraft in 406th Night Leaflet Squadron which crashed 4th March 1945,
The part comes from American B17G Flying Fortress 43-37516 'Tondalayo' was an overall matt black finished special operations aircraft attached to the 406th Night Leaflet Squadron based at Cheddington. This B17 bomber was the personal aircraft of the unit's commander, Lieutenant Colonel Aber and being retained by him when the squadron converted to B-24 Liberators.Lieutenant Colonel Aber was on his 51st mission when he was shot down on the 4th March 1945 by friendly fire.
The part comes with 2x A5 laminated information cards with pictures with diagrams and map.
