Engine accessory drive gear, rear engine gear box in BMW 801 radial engine from German Dornier D0217 shot down and crashed at Middlesbrough on the 15th January 1942 attacking shipping in Northern ports
This is a mounting ring use to stabilize one of the BMW 801 radial engines while it was in use in flight.
The part still retains some of its original steel colour with surface rust and pitting not to much thick heavy rust. The part only has some light damage from the impact of the crash but was well protected by the engine and lovely condition part is very solid not braking up at all and has been very nicely cleaned and is perfect for display or any collection. This is a nice part and a unusual one for the collection and is 6 inches long wide. The part comes from German Dornier D0217 which was shot down and crashed into the South Bank at Middlesbrough on the 15th January 1942 while attacking shipping in Northern ports. The part comes with 2 x A5 laminated information sheets with crash picture.
The Dornier Do217 was attacking shipping and ports along the Northeast coast. It is thought that it had attacked various targets at Skinningrove and Eston before bombing a ship off Hartlepool. The ship later sank after damaging the aircraft's engine. Do217 headed inland towards Middlesbrough striking its wing on a barrage balloon cable, crashing onto the railway sidings near what is now the South Bank railway station at 18.20hrs. Three bodies were found in the wreckage and were buried at Thornaby cemetery. Catterick's O.R.B. has the brief entry for this incident stating "Do17 crashed into balloon, South Bank, Middlesbrough".
