Damaged Panther tank track link. Most likely from a vehicle of the 2nd SS Panzer Division “Das Reich,” as it was recovered from a roadside ditch to the Northeast of Houffalize.
Between January 3 and 16, 1945, the 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich" fought a brutal, freezing rear-guard action northeast of Houffalize, holding open the northern neck of the collapsing bulge against intense American pressure. Tasked with delaying the Allied advance to secure an escape route for retreating German forces, the severely depleted division suffered catastrophic armour losses. Crippled by chronic fuel shortages, icy mountain terrain, and unrelenting Allied air attacks, Das Reich was forced to blow up or abandon dozens of its heavily prized Panther tanks along the snowy roads
