British 18-Pounder Shrapnel Shell – WWI Somme Battlefield Relic (Fired Example)
A very nice battlefield recovery and increasingly hard-to-find complete fired example of a British 18-pounder shrapnel shell.
Condition
The projectile retains its brass driving band, which shows an attractive brass finish. The outer casing is pitted and discoloured, though it still retains traces of its original black paint. There are no holes or structural damage.
The brass fuse is present and remains a bright finish; it screws into and out of the projectile correctly, though not fully smoothly, and shows some maker’s markings along with minor damage consistent with service use.
The brass cartridge case remains a good shiny colour with areas of discolouration. All original markings are still visible, including a clear date of September 1917.
The projectile and case are completely empty and inert. The piece has been carefully cleaned and is in overall very good display condition, making it a desirable addition to any collection.
Provenance
Recovered from the Somme battlefield (1916–1918), this is a genuine First World War battlefield find.
Additional Information
Supplied with 1 x A5 laminated information card.
