This is a fired British 18 pounder brass shell case which is battle damaged squashed near flat on the top neck down it is in nice condition it still retains a lot of its brass colour but has discolored and dirty with some damage from being buried as well. The case still has all of its original markings on the bottom very clear to see including very rare to find pre-war stock and dated the 17th August 1906 with no primer these pre war case are very hard to find battlefield recovered. The case is still very solid and is not braking up or falling apart it has been very well cleaned and perfect for display or any collection. The case was recovered from Bernafay wood in 2014 what was a battle in the opening days of the July 1916 Somme attack battlefield.The case comes with 2x A5 laminated information cards with map.

Bernafay Wood, located near Montauban village which was captured by the 9th Scottish Division on 3-4 July 1916 during the opening days of the Somme offensive. A dressing station was established there soon after its capture in early July and was in operation until October. The wood was lost by the British in the German spring offensive of 1918, with the wood captured by the Germans in March–April 1918. However, it was retaken on the 27 August 1918 again by the same soldiers of the 9th Scottish Division who captured it 2 years earlier.
