Russian blockade hand grenade ,complete and still with black paintwork remains recovered from the Don River, in the area outside Stalingrad, Russia 1942-1943
This is a complete but empty and inert Russian blockade hand grenade a converted 5 cm mortar shell adapted as an improvised grenade during WWII. The case still has its bakelite-style plug with large hole for the fuse at one end. And its small plug at the other. The grenade still has a great deal of original black paint and other original colouring it is pitted but solid, with no rust-through holes, and has been carefully cleaned. In excellent relic condition, they are sturdy, not friable, and ideal for display or any militaria collection. The hand grenade was recovered from the area where the 4th Panzer Army fought along the Don River, during the battles of November-December 1942 outside Stalingrad, Russia. It comes with an A5 laminated information sheet with photographs.
The 4th Panzer Army, which included units such as the 14th and 24th Panzer Divisions and the 92nd Infantry Division, was commanded by General Hermann Hoth. It guarded the outer perimeter of Stalingrad while the 6th Army engaged in the battle to capture the city. For over two months, the 6th Army fought fiercely within Stalingrad, capturing over 90% of the city but failing to eliminate the remaining pockets of resistance. On 19 November 1942, the Red Army launched Operation Uranus, encircling the entire 6th Army. During November and December, the 4th Panzer Army engaged Soviet forces outside the city and attempted to break the encirclement in Operation Winter Storm, but was unsuccessful.
