Battle damaged half a German 3.7cm flak shell carry case used by the 3.7cm flak anti-aircraft gun recovered from lake near Bastogne, Battle of the Bulge 1944
This is a battle-damaged half of a German 3.7cm Flak shell carry case, used with the 3.7cm Flak 18/36/37 anti-aircraft gun, which has been bent out of shape by an explosion. The box retains a significant amount of its original dark green exterior paint and red undercoat inside. The interior is well-preserved, with most of the original paintwork still intact and the internal racking remaining. The handle is still attached. It carries some dirt and silt from its time in the lake bed.
Despite being damaged, this half-box is in very good condition and extremely rare, especially given the amount of original paintwork surviving. Its preservation is largely thanks to being submerged in lake silt, which helped protect it over the decades. This relic belonged to the Luftwaffe 311th Flak Battalion and was recovered alongside Tiger I tank parts from a lake east of Bastogne, dating to the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944-1945. Given the very limited number of Tiger I tanks involved in the battle, it is possible to identify the units all recovered equipment came from in this area.
The Flak box half comes with two laminated A5 information cards with photographs.
All relics from the Luftwaffe 311th Flak Battalion in this collection were found alongside Tiger I tank parts, belonging to the only Wehrmacht units operating Tigers during the battle 14 in total, most of which were destroyed. These units included the 4th Company of Schwere Panzer Abteilung 506, elements of the 26th Volksgrenadier Division, the Panzer Lehr Division, and, of course, the 311th Flak Battalion, all active around Bastogne during the encirclement over Christmas 1944.
