This American M1 steel helmet was recovered from the woods in the area of the Longvilly Road, near Bastogne in the Ardennes, from the battlefield of the Battle of the Bulge during the winter of 1944–45.

A fantastic and increasingly rare battlefield relic from one of the most significant battles of the Second World War, the Battle of the Bulge was Germany’s final major offensive on the Western Front.

The fighting along the Longvilly Road took place on 19 December 1944, when American forces under Colonel George S. Cherry came under attack from elements of the German Panzer Lehr Division along the road between Longvilly and Bastogne. The fighting was intense, with the American forces suffering heavy losses in men and equipment, including approximately 200 vehicles.

Recovered from the battlefield area, this helmet represents a tangible piece of the fighting that took place around Bastogne during the desperate German offensive of December 1944.

A particularly evocative relic for collectors of Second World War and Battle of the Bulge militaria, with a direct association to the fighting around Bastogne and the Longvilly Road.
