This is a airframe inspection panel which is not complete ,The part is damaged by the impact of the crash and has gone very rusty from laying around the hillside it is in nice solid condition and has been very nicely cleaned and has only some small amount of its original colour but it is perfect for display or any collection the part is 5 inches long by 4 inches wide in size.
The part comes from German Focke Wulf 190 A-3 of 9. /JG5 Weisse14+ work number 2172 flown by Unteroffizer Oskar Helbig which was shot down by RAF mosquito on the 15th January 1945.The fighter crashed at Melingsvarden, Austevoll Hordaland in Norway.. The part comes with 2x A5 laminated information sheets with pictures of the crash site. The part has come from a private collection which the items were collected many years ago directly from the crash sites he visited and found including surface finds or some aircraft that were dug out and recovered all these parts now available for the first time.
Nine Focke wulf 190's took off from Herdla at 11:20 that day and headed south towards Leirvik harbour.To intercept the Banff Strike Wing which took off at 09:35, with six Mosquitos from 143 Squadron, four from 235 Squadron and four "Tsetse" Mosquitos from 248 Squadron. In addition, were the two outriders from Norwegian 333 Squadron. They were attacking the German cargoship "Claus Rickmers", flak ship V5304 "Seehund" and V5308 O B Rogge, and Raumboot R63 at Leirvik harbour.
The dogfight started at 11:29 and lasted for about 3 minutes. Focke wulf 2172 was badly damaged by a "Tsetse" Mosquito of 248 Squadron, flewn by Flight officer Peacock, navigator Field. The fighter with its pilot Oskar Helbig crash landed in rough terrain at Melingsvarden. He was rescued out from the burning wreck but died the next day. Helbig is buried at Solheim Cemetery, Bergen
